Rua das Trinas, ancient named Rua das Trinas do Mocambo, belongs to two administrative districts of Lisbon : Santos and Lapa. The presence of the court at that pleasant place near the river favored the construction of manorial houses and convents, between which fences limited by ways and roads (current Rua da Esperança, das Trinas e das Praças), where the initial nucleus of the Mocambo would come to appear. Rua das Trinas, is next to Madragoa district (ancient district of Mocambo) which urbane mesh presents characteristics of the Sec. XVII, XVIII and XIX, with his buildings in the origin arquitectural style of pombalino. The urbane mesh in irregularly squares and sketches, are formed by a set of main streets in parallel positioned regarding the river Tagus. In the XVII Century , the Madragoa, was majority occupied by black population originated from the Portuguese African Colonies. Later, in XVIII and XIX Centuries, there was brought there an important community originating from the region of Ovar (in the North of Portugal) which printed specific new characteristics to the district. While the men were devoting themselves to the fishing, the women - known for ovarinas or fishwives - were selling fish in the streets of the city or were working in the marines, loading coal and sand from ships, marking the whole imaginary inhabitant of Lisbon with his figure and proclamations. At the famous fate and commemorations of Santos Populares, the fishwife continues linked to the culture of the district. At this moment, are growing important developments and promotion events of Santos district, like an important pole of spread of Design. Here are centered several trade shops and Schools of the specialty. Main initiatives are promoted by – Santos Design District – SDD Business Association of Santos, established by a set of economical agents of the zone. Nowadays, Santos is a heterogeneous place, where the popular culture coexists with a more cosmopolitan and eclectic culture. It is one of the most important centers of nocturnal liveliness of Lisbon, providing lodging for a great variety of restaurants, bars and places of amusement.
